The short answer
Best for
Self-directed learners whose families can absorb the cost and want a software-first model
What you pay
$75,000 a year (SF, Palo Alto) · $65,000 (Piedmont). No financial aid. Checked Aug 2026
Bottom line
Real pacing gains, a 1:5 guide ratio and afternoons kids look forward to. It's a young model, so its college record is still being written

What families told us
Paraphrased from our interviews and public parent discussion, not testimonials.
Kids who used to dread school now ask to go during the holidays. And the afternoon program (climbing, public speaking, biking) replaces two or three separate pickups.
The dashboard stays green while a gap quietly grows. If your child hits a wall, outside tutoring is on you, and feedback on writing voice and argument feels thin.
"Finally a school that takes STEM seriously" is the first reaction. The worries come after: screen time and eyesight, motivation that runs on rewards, and a small peer group.
Is it a fit?

Alpha Palo Alto, 4260 El Camino Real: about 4,800 sq ft of leased commercial space, with no gym, field or lab.
Worth it if
Your child is self-directed and bored by a six-hour classroom. You can pay without financial pressure. And you are comfortable being in an early cohort of an experimental model.
Probably not if
A clear college pipeline, depth in the humanities, financial aid, or a large established peer network matters to you. Or your child needs specialist help when they get stuck.

Worth Knowing
- Ratios & Class Size: Alpha maintains a highly competitive 1:5–6 student-to-guide ratio. Individual micro-school cohorts are strictly capped at 25 students per class.
- Campus Afternoon Variance: Morning software learning is consistent, but afternoon programs (climbing, biking, public speaking) are run by local guides and third-party vendors, meaning activities vary by campus location.
- Admissions & Track Record: Launched locally in 2024, Alpha's very first high school cohort entered college this fall. Feedback profiles combine insights from local families and established out-of-state campuses.
