The seven that actually pay

Three of those take 14-year-olds. One takes eighth graders. If you've been waiting for 16 because that's when real jobs start, you left two years on the table. So did I.

Also worth staring at: $23.24 an hour at the San Mateo County Libraries — more than plenty of adults in this region make folding sweaters.

The single best $260 you'll spend

Certifications that convert to wages — lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, food handler.

Lifeguard certification at 15 is the only paid door that opens a year before 16. It runs roughly $260–$280 through local parks and rec departments. Teen wages around Concord average about $18.75/hr — so the cert pays for itself in about two weekends, and it hands a teenager real responsibility for other people's kids, which does more for a spine than any certificate printed on cardstock. Ages 11–14 can start with Junior Lifeguarding.

What unlocks at what age

Free roles worth more than most things you could buy

Most of these cost nothing and pay nothing. They hand teenagers responsibility years before an employer will, and the supervising staff become the reference that unlocks the paid role later. Two exceptions are worth knowing: Careers in Science pays its interns, and the Lawrence charges tuition before it pays.

The Golden Ticket: Careers in Science at Cal Academy

The Careers in Science (CiS) Intern Program at the California Academy of Sciences is a rare multi-year, year-round track for San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) 9th and 10th graders from communities underrepresented in STEM. It is a deep, continuous commitment where interns are hired as official, paid Academy employees earning hourly wages above the San Francisco minimum wage. They conduct actual field research alongside experts and facilitate learning on the public floor all the way until high school graduation. It costs families nothing to participate, but the highly competitive application window closes strictly in February.

The Gateway Strategy: The Lawrence Hall of Science

Conversely, some prestigious paid tracks require an upfront financial investment to unlock the door. The Lawrence Hall of Science runs paid summer Teen Research Programs in June and July; its highly selective TRP Summer Internship (seven or eight spots for entering 11th and 12th graders) is invitation only to teens who already completed that initial paid program. While you pay tuition for the introductory phase, the resulting 5-week summer internship flips the script by paying your teen a flat $1,200 stipend. Library homework helpers.

Teen-led math and tutoring networks.

1. Published dollar amount? No number, no paycheck.
2. Does it mention a California work permit? Real employers love paperwork. Products avoid it.
3. Application form, or checkout cart? A cart means tuition.
4. Age floor of 12 or 13? Almost always fee-based.
5. Does last year's page name real participants and projects, or is it stock photos and adjectives?

Much of the internet has this wrong: Coro Exploring Leadership pays a $250 completion stipend, not $1,000. The program page was updated, but search results weren't. Still tuition-free, still excellent. Just don't let your kid budget for a grand.

Do "Counselor-in-Training" programs pay?

‍Usually the opposite — you pay them. Most Bay Area CIT programs are tuition-based, priced only slightly below a regular camper week, so your teen helps run the camp while you cover the cost. It's worth it if you need summer childcare or if that specific program is a documented prerequisite for a paid role the following year. Otherwise, treat it as camp, not employment.

What's the fastest way for a 15-year-old to start earning?

‍Lifeguard certification. Does my teen need a work permit for these jobs?

‍For any paid role, yes — California requires a permit for minors. The order surprises people: the employer offers the job first, then the student, parent, and employer sign Form B1-1, and the school issues the actual permit (Form B1-4). It expires shortly after the next school year starts, and a new employer means a new permit.

Can a 14-year-old get a paid job in the Bay Area?

Yes. San José Works and San Francisco's MYEEP both start at 14, and 826 Valencia's YLAB takes students from eighth grade. Any paid role still needs a California work permit (Form B1-4), and some of the best-paid programs are limited to San Francisco residents or SFUSD students, so check residency first.
